How to set a WhatsApp username
2 min read
Setting a WhatsApp username takes about a minute once the option reaches your account. This guide covers the actual steps, what happens at each one, and the sensible way to prepare while you wait.
Before you start
Have your name ready and know that it passes the format rules. Usernames are 3 to 30 characters of lowercase letters, numbers, periods, and underscores, with a few extra restrictions covered in our rules guide. Checking first matters because the app gives you feedback one error at a time, while the username checker shows every rule at once and suggests a fix.
The steps
- Open WhatsApp and go to Settings, then tap your profile at the top.
- Look for the Username field below your name and phone number.
- Type your username. The app validates as you type and tells you if the name is taken.
- Confirm. The username now appears on your profile.
That is the whole process. The friction is never the steps; it is arriving with a name that is invalid or taken and improvising a worse one under pressure.
What actually changes after you save
People can now start a chat with you by searching your username, without having your phone number. Your number does not become hidden automatically; who can see it depends on your privacy settings, which are worth reviewing at the same time. Our privacy guide walks through the combination that keeps your number out of sight.
If the name you want is taken
You have two honest options: a variant, or a different name used consistently. Generate rule-safe variants with the username generator, and before committing, make sure the variant also works on Instagram and Facebook with the handle checker. A name that only works on WhatsApp splits your identity in half.
While you wait for the rollout
Decide your name now, validate it, and keep it ready. Rollout day then becomes a ten second task. The full waiting checklist is in preparing for the username rollout.
Common questions
Why do I not see the username option?
The feature is rolling out in waves by region and account. If your app is updated and the option is still missing, your account has not been reached yet. There is no way to force it.
Will my contacts be notified when I set a username?
No notification goes out. People see your username when they view your profile or find you by searching for it.
Can I remove my username later?
Yes. You can change or delete it in the same settings screen. Keep in mind that a released name can be claimed by someone else.
