Do WhatsApp usernames hide your number?

The phone number has always been WhatsApp’s biggest privacy problem. It is permanent, it is tied to your identity everywhere, and anyone who has it can message you. Usernames exist to break that link. Here is what they actually change, and what they do not.

The old problem

Giving someone your WhatsApp meant giving them your phone number, forever. The seller on a marketplace, the buyer of your old couch, the group of parents from school. The chat may last a week; the number lasts decades and follows you to your bank, your accounts, and your SIM.

What a username changes

With a username, people start chats with a handle instead of a number. Three consequences follow:

1. Revocability. A username can be changed. A phone number, practically, cannot. If a handle leaks somewhere you regret, you rotate it and move on.
2. Separation. Your chat identity separates from your SIM identity. What a stranger learns about you from quietbaker is what you chose to put there.
3. No enumeration. Leaked contact databases are lists of phone numbers. A username is not derivable from any of them.

The settings that complete the picture

A username without adjusted privacy settings is a door with a new lock and an open window. The combination that makes sense for most people showing a public handle: number visible to nobody or contacts only, photo to contacts, and the username doing the public-facing work.

The new risk usernames introduce
