WhatsApp is rolling out usernames so people can chat with you without knowing your phone number. Like every platform, WhatsApp only accepts names that follow a fixed set of format rules. This guide lists them all, with examples.
One thing first: these rules cover format, meaning whether a name can be accepted at all. Whether a specific name is still free is a separate question that only the app itself can answer, because WhatsApp offers no public availability check. The rules
A WhatsApp username must:
- Stay within the allowed length. Very short names and very long names are rejected. Aim for something between roughly 3 and 30 characters.
- Use only lowercase letters, numbers, periods, and underscores. No spaces, no hyphens, no emoji, no accented characters.
- Contain at least one letter. A username cannot be numbers and symbols only.
- Not begin like a web address. Names starting with patterns like “www.” are blocked.
- Avoid awkward punctuation placement. Starting or ending with a period, or stacking separators together, causes rejections.
Some names that follow every rule still get rejected because they are reserved, impersonate brands, or collide with a name that is already taken.
