WhatsApp group links vs chat links

WhatsApp has two link types that people constantly confuse, and the confusion has real consequences: one of them can hand strangers a seat in your community, the other hands them a private line to you. Here is the difference, cleanly.

Chat links: a door to you

A click-to-chat link (wa.me/<number>) opens a one-to-one chat with you. Whoever taps it can message you; nothing more. Group links: a door to everyone

A group invite link (chat.whatsapp.com/<code>) adds the tapper into a group with every member’s messages and, depending on settings, their numbers visible. Only admins can create one, from inside the group. It can be revoked and regenerated, which invalidates all shared copies at once.

Belongs: communities you intend to be joinable: a class, a team, a neighborhood, a fan group.

The mistakes that come from mixing them

• Publishing a group link where a chat link belonged. The classifieds ad that meant “message me” but posted the family group invite. Strangers arrive inside the group. Revoke immediately if this happens.
• Publishing a chat link where a group was wanted. Everyone messages you individually and you become the human message broker. Create the group, invite from there.
• Printing a group link. Risky by design: revoking it (say, after a spammer joins) turns every printed copy into a dead link. Print chat links and QR codes; share group links in channels you can edit.

The quick decision rule

Ask what should happen when a stranger taps. If the answer is “they talk to me,” build a chat link. If it is “they join us,” use a group invite, and treat it like a key, not a poster.
