How to get the same username everywhere

One name, everywhere, is the whole game. People who find you on Instagram should be able to guess your WhatsApp. This guide covers why that is harder than it sounds, and how to do it anyway.

Why platforms reject each other’s handles

Every platform wrote its own username rules years apart, for different reasons, and none of them coordinated:

• X caps handles at 15 characters and allows underscores but not periods.
• Facebook demands at least 5 characters and allows periods but not underscores.
• WhatsApp, Instagram, and TikTok are lowercase only, with periods and underscores allowed.
• YouTube is the loose one: it even allows hyphens.

Put together, the separators cancel each other out. A period loses you X. An underscore loses you Facebook. A hyphen loses you everything except YouTube.

The intersection that always works

A handle survives every mainstream platform when it is:

1. Lowercase letters and numbers only. No separators at all.
2. 15 characters or fewer. X sets the ceiling.
3. At least 5 characters. Facebook sets the floor.
4. Contains at least one letter. Numbers alone fail on WhatsApp and Facebook.

A practical claiming order

1. Test the format first. Run your name through the handle checker so you are not improvising variants platform by platform.
2. Check availability by hand. The checker links each platform’s profile URL. An empty profile page usually means the name is free or was banned; the signup flow gives the final answer.
3. Claim the strictest platforms first. If the name is free on X, it is very likely fine everywhere longer and looser.
4. Use the same fallback everywhere. If your first choice is taken anywhere, switch to the fallback on every platform, even the ones where the original was free.

When the clean name is gone

Resist the urge to solve each platform separately. anna.perez, anna_perez, and annaperez1 scattered across three networks reads like three different people. Instead, generate variants that fit the intersection with the username generator and pick one you can claim everywhere at once.
