Name-based patterns
The strongest usernames are boring in the best way:

A stable detail means something that will still be true in five years. Your profession, your city, your craft. Not your favorite show.
Interest-based patterns
When you would rather not lead with your name, anchor the handle in what you do:

Should my username match my real name?
For most people, yes. A username exists so people can find and recognize you. If your name is common and taken, add a stable detail like a profession or city rather than random numbers.
Are underscores or periods better?
On WhatsApp both work. If you ever want the same handle on Facebook, periods travel better, because Facebook rejects underscores.
